EIGHT people have been killed and four women reportedly abducted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents near Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
Boko Haram insurgents struck at Bale Mamman in Jere Local Government Area about seven kilometres to Maiduguri on Tuesday night, shooting and throwing explosive devices into the village from 6.30pm. The attack lasted till about 10pm, a military source said.
Many residents of Maiduguri were thrown into panic even as many fled their houses. It was alleged that the insurgents were targeting a military base in the city but a youth vigilance group later told Daily Sun that the insurgents were firing into Bale Mamman, located in South-East of Maiduguri.
Sources said the military in conjunction with the youth vigilante quickly mobilised to the area to halt the attack. It was learnt that eight people were later discovered killed by the insurgents, who also abducted four women.
“Some of the villagers have already fled the community as soon as the shooting started,” says a vigilante member who did not want his name in print. The vigilante member said the military troops deployed to the village with Civilian JTF later stopped the insurgents’ attempts to kill and burn more houses in village.
