
THE Board of Editors of The Sun Publishing Limited has considered nominees for the annual The Sun Awardsfor2015.Afterthe deliberations, which lasted for two days, the award winners have been selected. They will be formally unveiled on Sunday, November 15, 2015.
In a statement yesterday, the newspaper’s Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Eric Osagie, said the selection process was pains- taking and rigorours, as the Board of Editors considered many Nigerians, who have made marks in their respective endeavours this year.
The Board of Editors is made up of the Managing Director/Editor- in-Chief (who chairs the selection process), Deputy Managing Director/Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Executive Director, editors, Chairman of Editorial Board, senior management staff as well as other senior editorial staff.
Mr. Osagie revealed that debate during the selection process was robust and frank without any sentiment, adding that the award winners were selected on their merits. He disclosed that the selection was made, bearing in mind the integrity that has always trailed The Sun Awards since it started in 2003.
“In the selection process, members of The Sun Board of Editors x-rayed the nominees dispassionately before arriving at the winners. The debate spanned two full days, stretching several hours before we eventually arrived at the winners. It was so because we take the awards seriously. You must know that owing to the thoroughness in our selection process, our awards have never been faulted,” he said.
The award categories for The Sun Awards 2015 are: 1. The Sun Man of the Year; 2. Governor of the Year; 3. Most Supportive First Lady; 4. Investor of the Year; 5. Banker of the Year; 6. Lifetime Achievement; 7. Business Person of the Year; 8. Public Service Award; 9. Sport Person of the Year; 10. Creative Person of the Year; 11. Nigerian Hero Award; 12. Nollywood Person of the Year; 13. Hospitality Man of the Year; 14. Manufacturer of the Year; 15. Industrialist of the Year.
Many prominent Nigerians have won The Sun Awards in the past. They include, Minister of Transport, Chibuike Amaechi, Minister of Power, Works & Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola; Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi; President of Dangote Groups Limited, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Chairman of Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga.
Others are former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso; former governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan; former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; ex-governor of Gombe, Alhaji Danjuma Goje and former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Akpabio.
Others, who had also won the awards are former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida; former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Danjuma; Chief Tony Anineh; Prof. Joe Irukwu, musician Jon Jazzy, Mrs. Ekaete Unoma Akpabio and Mrs. Doorosimi Suswan, among others.
