DEPUTY Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, escaped a suspected assassination at- tempt on Tuesday morning in Abuja.
In a statement by his Special Media Adviser, Uche Anichukwu, the attempt occurred at about 10:00am between Apo Flyover and Dantata Construction Company’s yard, close to Old Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Headquarters junction on his way to work.
The suspected gunmen allegedly operated in a tinted, white Mercedes Benz AMG E63 without a plate number.
The vehicle, which was positioned by Apo Bridge, on noticing that Ekweremadu’s convoy took a right turn to join the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway also, made a turn. The occupants attempted to attack the convoy, but were blocked. The driver violently broke into the convoy and made several frantic attempts to attack Ekweremadu’s official car.
Anichukwu said security operatives charged at the Benz driver, who made a U- turn, and partially slammed into an oncoming vehicle on the opposite lane of the highway and escaped.
Anichukwu also said the development was reported to security agencies there- after.
But Force Public Rela- tions Officer (FPRO), Bisi Kolawole and Anjusi Mamza, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police PRO, said they were not aware of the incident.
